You can also chat in a chat group, only politely and culturally. Before proceeding with mustang, let’s talk a few words about the Lamborghini Gallardo.
A little bit about Lamborghini
The Lamba project is not finished and there will be several other episodes. Since we do not do everything ourselves and some works are ordered at the other companies, then we have to wait for their completion.
At the moment we are waiting for the completion of works on the passenger compartment and the glaziers. After they make the vehicle glasses, we will install them on the car and make sure that the gaps are correct. If all goes well, we will start preparing the car body for painting.
The process of preparation and painting is a very long and monotonous work. Therefore, we decided to start a second project in parallel with the Lamborghini Gallardo because that will provide us with the possibility to release new episodes more often than once a month and not to stretch or concoct them.
After the announcement of the new project in the previous episode we’ve got a lot of comments with suggestions about the donor for the Mustang. There were such variants as GAZ-24 “Volga”, Moskvich, Lada, BMW. Someone mentioned even the space frame, but still no one guessed.
Capri as a donor car
So we have chosen a Ford Capri as a donor. This car has a great history.
It was built more than 40 years ago as a European alternative to the Mustang. Ford Capri became the first representative of Ford sports cars in Europe. The car was designed by American designer Philip Clark, known as one of the main developers of the Ford Mustang.
As a very successful car the Capri had been produced from 1969 to 1986. In total during the entire time of its release about 2 million cars were sold.
The car had rear-wheel drive and used mechanical components from the Ford Cortina. It was conceived as a European Ford Mustang.
You are probably wondering now why this Ford Capri is different from the Ford Capri you have just seen in the above.
The truth is that this project is not the second and not even the third project in the line of my attempts to build this car.
For me it was my own first project. I started it in 2012. Why did I even decide to make a Ford Mustang model of a Ford Capri? Why Ford Mustang at all?
It’s simple. After watching the movie “Gone in Sixty Seconds,” I just fell in love with the Shelby Mustang 1967. It became my dream. I really think that this car can be a dream.
For me personally, the Shelby Mustang is better than the Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti and all the other supercars rolled into one. If you agree with this, leave a comment at the bottom of the page.
Why Ford Capri?
So, here is the reason why Ford Capri have been chosen as the basis. Dreaming about the Mustang, I started searching in the Internet the information about the prices.
To be honest, I was shocked to the core. For example, at the present time there is only one Shelby Mustang Eleanor sold in Russia at a price of 23 million rubles ($ 328,000).
With that in mind, I realized that if I ever have the possibility to buy such a car, it will be in the distant future. But I want to get my dream now, while I am still young. Therefore, it was decided to make a car with my own hands.
Having set my mind on the goal of making a car, I got a job at a car service center in order to master all the necessary skills. Therefore, I can say that this car has changed my life. Everything started because of it.
While working at the service station, I began to think over the details of the project and look for a suitable donor. I considered two car models as donors – the Opel Manta and the Ford Capri.
I stopped at the Ford Capri. Because Ford Mustang and Ford Capri. Ford is Ford.
Ford Capri is also a European version of the Mustang and has more options for increasing power.
Buying an old Capri
I’ve been looking for a Ford Capri for quite a long time. By lucky happenstance, I found this car here in garages on the outskirts of St. Petersburg.
It was in very sad state, disassembled and littered with some boards and rags.
I saw it accidentally in the garages, found the owner and at the fifth meeting finally agreed with him about the sale.
The body works were started in the workshop.
I disassembled the passenger compartment and saw that there were too many holes in the platform.
So I had to reweld all of the car bottom.
Also a one-for-one Mustang mockup was made.
According to it, I built a metal frame of shaped tubes.
Then I cut off the Capri roof, the rear wings and holders, and welded this frame into the tail end of the car.
After that, I moved the car to another garage and there began works on the external form of the Mustang.
There the car was completely sealed with the foam seal.
After that, with the aid of a knife, a saw and a sandpaper, I began to shape the car into a Mustang silhouette. Finally, I got such kind of a foam mobile.
Next, I took matrix from these forms and installed the molds of these matrixes on this car.
Then the original bumper and sidelights were purchased. I spliced them with my homemade wings.
But as you can see, they are missing on the car now, because we have made a seat of them.
I liked all that I did to the car then. It seemed that everything was done greatly. But then I saw the real Shelby Mustang. After that, I realized that my car was far from ideal.
Therefore, it was decided to remake everything, but for this I had to gain more experience and resources.
Well, what can I say? The time has come.
Our plan of rework
So what are we going to do about it?
We will remove all the mounted parts: hood, doors, trunk lid and rear wings. And then we just throw everything out.
We cut off the roof, rear quarter pillars and extend the wheelbase, because the Capri is shorter than the Mustang.
Further, the body. What can we do about it? The first option is to buy the original body parts, ordering them from the US, but it will be very expensive.
The second option is to make the body ourselves. We have chosen the second variant, of course.
But this time we will not make the body of a foam using whatever is available, but by a more professional method.
The passenger compartment.
We will make it in accordance with the original, so, everything will be changed here, except for the seats and the backseat.
They are very comfortable here, because their style and fabrication are similar to the ones in Mustang.
Under the hood
Now let me show you what’s under the hood.
Here we have a 2-liter V6 engine of 100 horsepower.
Let’s try to start it.
Yes, it looks really dirty. First we will blow it with the air.
Fuel pipes are not connected to the fuel tank now, so we will pump gasoline directly from the canister.
By the way, we can show you the start of the engine that happened 5 years ago.
I had to power the coil directly, because the engine did not run for more than 5 years.
The engine is surprisingly easy to start. It keeps idle speed well. It is picking up the speed very good too.
Despite the fact that the engine is in good condition and works well, we will refuse it and install a larger engine here, because Mustang is not a Capri and should work well.
